Throughout the 1970s, David Christie visited the Isle of Man five times to enjoy the various and varied forms of transport to be found. It was a time of great change, as older ferries and buses gave way to more modern models. At the same time, the railways were being taken over by Lord Ailsa in an effort to stop the system closing down.
Regular visitors to the island will recognise many of the scenes shown in the numerous, well-reproduced colour photos. Many of the streets have changed little over the years, all those horse trams are still running, with only the road vehicles being different from today! If you enjoy spotting what are now classic cars, you'll have hours of fun looking in the background.
Christie is a transport enthusiast and, as such, the greater part of the book is given over to buses and ferries which might disappoint the railway enthusiast. However, there are already numerous books on the trams and trains whereas this covers much new ground. This is a very worthwhile addition to any Manx transport fans bookshelf.
