Stopping off at Pendon, Bekonscot and Miniatur Wunderland along the way, the reader gets a little light history, although the book concentrates on the motivation for their creation rather than providing great details.
Casting the net wide, Garfield also looks at architects’ models, art, wargaming and even flea circuses. He tells of the model boat that brought about the end of slavery and how a model beats drawings and computer animations when trying to explain complicated events or designs.
If you are looking for a practical guide, this isn't it, but for anyone interested in the wider hobby or understanding what drives us to spend hours at the workbench, it's a fascinating and very enjoyable read.
