This A4 landscape volume describes a particularly-fascinating period in the history of the railways in our realm, ranging from when steam was disappearing through to Privatisation. We're slightly surprised to see almost no images showing the more modern types running through a steam-age infrastructure – for instance, semaphores on the ECML proper didn’t disappear until 1977 and semaphores in the West Country east of Cornwall didn’t go for a decade later. It’s good to see some of the lesser-known types of motive power illustrated, and some more obscure locations, but several areas are not represented. In general, the colour reproduction is excellent, but much of the black and white imagery is rather ‘flat’ and lacking in contrast. Certainly, for modellers of this more modern era (though it finished over 20 years ago!), this book should prove to be invaluable, though the inclusion of an index would have been useful.
