With trackplans and a wealth of archive photography, Dennis Lovett and Allan Mclean's new book looks at the railways of Fife.

Middleton Press continues its expansive series of books on the railways of the UK. Its latest, written by Dennis Lovett and Allan McLean tackles the railways of the Kingdom of Fife, from Inverkeithing to Thornton Junction, via Cowdenbeath covers colliery branches, too.

The authors book description is as follows: "The railways covered in this album were constructed piecemeal until they were formed into a comprehensive network under the auspices of the North British Railway. Add in the myriad of mineral lines built to serve the collieries and a complex system emerges.

"Between 1890 and 1970 the line as far as Cowdenbeath enjoyed main line status as part of the Edinburgh to Perth direct line. Once coal was king in this area, but coal mining is now long gone, and the remaining route is a shadow of itself today with ScotRail providing the majority of trains over the route."

The book is available from the Middleton Press website (£18.95), or your local transport book stockist (ISBN: 9781910356760)
