Scalespeed changes hands

Established in 1966, John & Sarah Fereday have become the third owners of the vintage model locomotive servicing business.

It currently offers servicing on all types of locomotives, motor rewinds and remagnetisation in the firm's unique way, for Hornby Dublo, Triang, Wrenn and Lima models.

Unsatisfactory performance can often be traced to a poor magnetic field resulting in lack of torque and overheating. Rewinding and remagnetising the motor in situ normally produces a dramatic improvement in performance. If required, the commutator can be replaced in the ubiquitous XO3 and XO4 motors found in many Hornby and Tri-ang locomotives.

Tri-ang wheels can be reprofiled to run on Code 100 track, allowing enthusiasts to keep treasured older models running smoothly on their layouts. John normally performs a light service at the same time as the model, which has to be dismantled for the work.

It's not all about the past, however, as Scalespeed can also fit decoder chips for those who have taken the DCC path.

John has over 15 years of experience in repairing and servicing locomotives for model shops and private customers. He tells us that taking on Scalespeed offered an exciting opportunity to develop and keep a valuable service alive.
