Newcastle and District Model Railway Society relocates

After 42 years on the fourth floor of a run-down building in central Newcastle, The Newcastle and District Model Railway Society (N&DMRS) moves into new premises.

Having run at its previous premises since 1978, N&DMRS was given notice to vacate the building by the landlord who wanted to redevelop the city centre building. Finding alternative accommodation of a similar size but with affordable rent proved difficult and disbanding the club was becoming a distinct possibility.

Thankfully, Newcastle City Council offered a lease on part of the former Grade 2 Listed Scotswood Library on Armstrong Road in Newcastle and the long-standing club moved to its new premises on September 16.

Peter Brown, Chairman of N&DMRS said "after years of constantly moving equipment and layouts up and down 60 steps to our fourth storey clubhouse, members are looking forward to ground floor space with level access and easy parking. The new venue offers a real opportunity for the club to grow and attract new members."

The club is planning an open day after Covid restrictions are lifted. Within hours of clearing out the old clubrooms, new restrictions were imposed in the northeast which means the club is unable to meet, though it plans to welcome visitors in the future on Monday and Thursday evenings from 19:45 to 22:00. For more details on opening arrangements, visit the club's website.
