Hornby announces the end of Playtrains

It feels like only yesterday we were announcing the launch of Playtrains, Hornby’s range of remote-controlled battery-powered trainsets for 3-to-6-year-olds, but its time on the shelves is coming to an end.

Although not a sales flop, according to Hornby, Playtrains didn’t quite work as an entry-level toy, and research is well underway for a replacement.

Playtrains is still on sale at the moment, with no official date yet confirmed on when it will come off the shelves, but its likely to be once stock has ran out.

Released in 2021, Playtrains replaced Hornby’s Junior range, whose global sales between its Paddington and Express Train variants have totalled more than 40,000 units – it’s a lucrative market. The Playtrains range features a whole selection of products, with the trains featuring working lights, multiple sounds, and three speeds in both forward and reverse, and they run on an easy-to-clip-together track system.
