50008 Thunderer worked its last train in November 1991 and was withdrawn in June 1992. Being surplus to requirements, it was the 46th Class 50 locomotive to be withdrawn after more than 24 years of service. Its engine hours stood at 8,537.
In 2006, the locomotive was purchased by an individual who funded the restoration. It is now based at the DCR site at Washwood Heath, Birmingham and carries the same livery from its final years of service.
