Volunteers from the narrow-gauge railway at Amberley Museum announce the successful acquisition of a Baguley Drewry diesel locomotive, BD3699/1973.

Built in 1973, BD3699 is one of four diesel-hydraulic locomotives constructed by Baguley Drewry for the Ministry of Defence and originally served at the Chilmark installation near Salisbury, Wiltshire. Its arrival at Amberley marks a significant addition to the Museum’s operational fleet, strengthening the diesel roster that supports daily train services for visitors.

Formerly operated by the Gartell Light Railway in Templecombe, Somerset, the locomotive has been placed on long-term loan to the Amberley Museum Trust for an initial five-year period, with the expectation that this arrangement will be extended.

The opportunity to acquire BD3699 arose earlier this year when Amberley volunteer Simon King visited the Gartell Light Railway and learned that the locomotive might be available. Discussions with John Gartell led to a mutually beneficial agreement, culminating in the locomotive’s relocation on Monday, May 12th. The move was professionally managed by Morgan’s Lift & Go.

Before entering service, BD3699 will undergo commissioning work to ensure compatibility with Amberley’s railway systems, along with driver training and familiarisation. The locomotive is expected to begin regular operation later this summer.
