Damage to decoders, DCC systems and layout-control accessories can all usually be traced back to shorts and overloads. Circuit protection is therefore needed on the DCC bus to ensure that voltage spikes from shorts, overloads and surges don’t cause potentially catastrophic damage on your model railway. Of course, most DCC systems have some level of protection - but this can be slow to act and unpredictable. Some systems don’t even have any overload protection at all!

On larger layouts, a short or overload in one area often causes a shutdown of the entire railway - meaning all trains stop and operation becomes impossible for everyone until the problem is rectified. Not an ideal situation - especially on a club or exhibition layout! Even worse if sound is being used, with everything going quiet and then having to restart!
