BRM Cake Box Challenge 2021 - What if the railways had continued?

Builder: Michael Cowin

Having rediscovered model railways during lockdown, a cakebox challenge was a chance to learn something new. My inspiration came from Cumbria and its once vast network of industrial railways; my cakebox as a "what if the railways had continued", the railwayman waiting for the engine to couple up to the quarry train, idly chatting with mid-century Phil Parker.

My 2 pieces of rubbish started with a warped sheet of foam board, levelled with foam packaging scraps at the corners, with the road made from a strip of cereal packet bent and glued over a strip of thick cardboard to create camber. The banks were built up with scraps of foam board and sculptamold and then covered in static grass. The bushes were made from lichen from a local park covered in foam flock, with the hedge made from frayed string with the same covering. The stove fire flicker in the Ratio hut is a recycled tealight wired off a USB cable.

Both figures came from Modelu and were painted up mid miniature painting, so the paints were ready to use! Weathering was a  mixture of washes, weathering powders and paints.

For my first attempt I’m very happy with the result.
