BRM Cake Box Challenge 2021 - Steampunk monorail
Builder: Ben Bucki
Saltaire (Victoria Road), of the West Riding Monorail Transportation Company, represents the very end of a bay platform somewhere within the large Overhead Railway Station complex, perched loftily above the Yorkshire mill town of Saltaire.
I’m a Steampunk enthusiast, and I used this challenge to finally build part of an idea sketched, but never completed, over a decade ago for a project I worked on for an exhibition at the Bradford Industrial Museum.
It was a challenge working in O scale in such a small space, not least because Steampunk in general errs on the larger side of things. I rotated the cakebox to give me 8 inches of height and length, versus 6 inches of width, and used it to model an internal scene, as if the viewer were a passenger standing on the platform within an iron/glass/stone trainshed.
Materials were mainly plastics, cut on my laser-cutter -I planned to use steam effects and didn’t want anything wood or card that might be vulnerable to warping- and these were mainly scraps and offcuts from my old job as a DT Technician. Other details were from old toys, kits, DIY parts, and bike gears, with the metal figures from S&D.
