BRM Cake Box Challenge 2021 - Knockside Halt

Builder: Marlyn Price

As a cartoon illustrator and designer of whimsical objects, which included his love of railways, Rowland Emett’s images have inspired this small diorama. I think Emett would have approved the creation of something humorous from items, which would normally be discarded!

Knockside Halt, named after an ancestral tenant farm in Moray, has a Highland theme. The laird is enjoying driving one of his quaint locomotives on the narrow gauge line, created to link the numerous, small, outlying distilleries in Speyside, and also used by locals for ‘special day trips’!

Grandma Giles, a much loved character of my grandfather, is a bit of a battle-axe, and reminds me of the strong Highland women, who didn’t suffer fools, and often ruled the roost behind the scenes. During her visit, Grandma is well attired for that nip in the Highland air with her woollen dress, handbag and brolly ‘at the ready’!

Model railway items: Hornby 00 track; engine chassis from Dapol Kitmaster ‘Pug’ kit; Hornby plastic wheel sets.

Recycled items include: old piece of hardboard; A3 sketch pad backing board, grey packing paper; cereal box card; plastic straws; aluminium can; plastic vitamin tub.
