BRM Cake Box Challenge 2021 - Home Depot

Builder: Keith Addenbrooke

Home Depot is an HO Scale model of a Santa Fe Combination Freight House and Passenger Depot built from plans in the November 1979 Model Railroader.  The only compromise was shortening the rear loading dock to fit within 8”.

The build is on RMweb at:  Home Depot - a Lockdown Cakebox.  It’s my first scratchbuild.

Everything has been built using scrap material and painted in the pre-1950 colour scheme.  The main structure is of double-thickness packing card, with an outer layer from cereal packet or similar card.  Wooden battens and roof brackets are thin strips of card, as are window frames, which are Santa Fe standard “6 over 9” sash windows.  Windows, doors and the bay window were made separately using multiple layers of card: there are over forty pieces in total in the bay window sub-assembly.  The shingle roof pattern has been scribed, as has other detail on the boards.  Door handles were cut from office staples and glazing is food packaging.  Only the people are commercial.

The Train Order Board has a plastic kit sprue mast.  Extra sleepers were added to OO track to look American and weathered by painting.  Ground is old cork roadbed and flock powder.
