Initially used for passenger services on the West Coast Main Line, the Class 44 were later reassigned to freight duties from Toton depot, reaching as far as York and Severn Tunnel Junction. Withdrawals began in 1976, and the entire class was retired by 1980, though two units (D8 and D4) survive in preservation.
