The Railway Correspondence and Travel Society (RCTS) has announced that it has launched a new interactive web-based Modern Traction Locomotive Database, accessible to all at locodata.org.uk.
The database contains details of every diesel, electric and gas turbine locomotive that has run on the national network starting back in the 1890s through to the very latest changes in stock each month.
All renumbering, naming and disposal information is included along with each reallocation and explanatory notes where appropriate. Its unique feature is that searches can be made by number, number range, class, etc., as well as by name and there is a ‘free text’ search for disposal and preservation information.
Additionally, it can be used to find details of every locomotive allocated to a particular depot or combination of depots over any specified time period and search results can be downloaded as pdf files if required.
It has been developed using thousands of hours of volunteer time and is the culmination of the RCTS digitisation project, which has also seen nearly every one of its books published since the 1950s also being made available for download along with every single edition of its house magazine, The Railway Observer, now in its 97th year.
