A cellular foam structure developed by the manufacturer is set to offer a replacement to traditional cork underlay for OO gauge track.

Natural Scenics, manufacturer and supplier of scenic consumables is introducing a range of pre-cut foam underlay sections to suit Hornby and Peco Set Track systems. The manufacturer has shared pre-production samples with us, ahead of their introduction to market this summer.

Developed using a closed cellular foam, the material promises "excellent properties, being pliable, with good resistance to stretch and compression, is water resistant with good noise reduction and absorbent vibration qualities".

Each piece is precision cut from 3mm material thickness, with the range designed to mirror the shape and sizes of Set Track pieces.

Michael Kish of Natural Scenics commented, "This new range offers simplicity in layout construction, while giving the modeller the ability to add detail to the ballast shoulder. While cork has been a favourite insulation for many years, it will not be long before the environmental issue will arise, and no doubt cost and availability will be an issue. The benefit of the modern material is that it is lightweight, easily produced in a repetitive format and gives consistent accuracy, with a 'like-for-like' cost of cork."
