Arriving with the model retailer are resin-cast ready-to-plant models of a London & South Western Railway (LSWR) signal box.

Kernow Model Rail Centre is releasing an exclusive model commission of an LSWR signal box. Manufactured in 4mm:1ft scale exclusively for the retailer by Bachmann, the model of the ex-London South Western Railway (LSWR) Type 3a, grade two listed signal box at Petersfield is now available to purchase.

The Petersfield type 3a signal box was built c.1885 and is located on the Portsmouth Direct Line between Havent and Guildford, the location of Kernow Model Rail Centre's second store which opened last year.

Chris Trerise, Managing Director said, “The Petersfield signal box was a logical choice for us to commission due to its unique style and its location on the Portsmouth Direct Line local to our Guildford store.”

Graham Muspratt, Development Manager added, "The LSWR signal boxes have lots of character and were classified into distinct types. The release of the Petersfield type 3a box, as well as being local to our Guildford store complements our existing Bachmann Scenecraft exclusive LSWR Type 4 signal box of ‘Bude’ and the LSWR ground frame hut that are already available and can be found across the Southern Regions south west network.”

Chris continued, “We are pleased that our Guildford store has been able to remain fully open to our customers since the Covid-19 lockdown.”

Petersfield signal box combines features of ex-LSWR type 2 and type 3 designs and protects the Station Road level-crossing and formerly controlled the junction of the Midhurst branch that was closed in 1955. Although the closure of the goods yards occurred during the 1970s, the volume of passenger traffic and the need to guard the busy level-crossing has kept the signal box in operation. It still contains a 10 lever Stevens (Railway Signalling Co.) frame and locking rack, together with a circuit diagram, blockshelf and block instruments.
