One of Britain’s most iconic locomotives, Class 55 (Deltic) 55019 Royal Highland Fusilier, will take centre stage at the Great Central Railway on Friday, May 23rd.
The ever-popular diesel running Friday, among the longest mileage days on a preserved railway in the UK, features six full return trips – a total of 96 miles – all hauled by this legendary locomotive. Taking place on the UK's only preserved double-track main line, the day promises entertainment and the chance to experience the full power and unmistakable roar of a Napier Deltic engine in its element.
Passengers can enjoy the full heritage experience with an onboard buffet car offering hand-pulled ales, ciders, spirits, and a variety of snacks and refreshments. In the evening, the 18:30 departure from Loughborough Central will feature a Fish & Chip Special, giving guests the chance to savour a classic meal served with a side of Deltic thunder – pre-booking is required for this popular option.
Originally built in 1961 at the Vulcan Foundry by English Electric, 55019 was one of 22 Class 55 locomotives designed to haul high-speed express services along the East Coast Main Line, regularly running at speeds of up to 100 mph with its 3,300-horsepower twin-engine configuration. Withdrawn from regular service in 1982 and preserved by the Deltic Preservation Society, 55019 remains fully operational and continues to delight rail enthusiasts across the country.
The Deltic Preservation Society trade stand will be open throughout the day, offering a wide range of Deltic-themed merchandise and memorabilia for fans eager to take home a piece of diesel history.
