Tony Wright was given the opportunity to examine, run and photograph an example of Accurascale’s forthcoming ‘Buckjumper’ in the form of the J68. This is a ‘proving’ model.
The prototypes were built in batches (1912-14, a total of 20, and 1923, a further 10). They were the final development of the original Hill 0-6-0Ts of 1886, and were used for both passenger work and shunting. They were closely-related to the J67s and J69s (also in production by Accurascale); indeed one was rebuilt into a J67. The big visual difference between the J67s/J69s and the J68s was the high-roofed side window cabs complete with square spectacles front and rear on the J68s.
Accurascale has captured the J68 ‘look’ perfectly. Remember, this a pre-production model (any ‘discrepancies’ will be sorted in the production examples – straight vertical cab handrails, for instance). The livery application is exemplary, and the running is exquisite; the loco running perfectly through Peco track and hand-made points/crossings. The drivers will be blackened on the production models.
Accurascale is to be congratulated on tackling the GER 0-6-0Ts such is the huge number of variations. I look forward to seeing the production models.
More details will be revealed in the coming weeks.
