Clayton Equipment, the only British independent locomotive manufacturer in the UK capable of designing and manufacturing locomotives up to 150T, has agreed a contract to supply one of its CB40 locomotives to Sellafield Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.

The Clayton Equipment CB40 locomotive is a 40T 0-4-0 battery locomotive. The locomotive is self-contained, with on-board battery charging. Battery charging is undertaken from a three-phase supply, providing 100% maximum emission free solutions.

Fitted with a large battery, the CB40 has lower operational and maintenance costs, and is capable of long-range use without recharging. In addition, the regenerative braking ensures reduced brake wear and reduced charging times.

The order follows the recent supply of two hybrid CBD80 locomotives to Sellafield Ltd as part of its investment in greener technology.
