7 ‘must-see’ layouts at The Festival of British Railway Modelling 2024

With 30 fantastic layouts in attendance, it's easy to see why model railway fans love our Doncaster show! And this year, our event takes place on February 9-10th, 2024. Held at the Doncaster Racecourse, have you got your ticket yet?

Covering a wide range of scales and gauges, we’ve been given the arduous task of selecting seven layouts that you’ll not want to miss – although, admittedly, we think they are all worthy of a visit.

Here are our picks…

Monkchester in N

Started life in 1972 on a 5’ x 3’ baseboard designed to sit on a dining room table, ‘Monkchester’ has been on quite a journey to become the exhibition favourite that it is today. A highly immersive layout that showcases some impressive modelling, it’s definitely a must-see!

Rolvenden in P4

Robin Gay found the perfect world of station, yard, engine and carriage sheds in compact form with characterful stock thanks to Colonel Stephens' approach to light railways. A P4 layout that never fails to impress, ‘Rolvenden’ should be high up on your layout watch list.

Hills of the North in OO

This large OO layout needs little introduction, as it’s been a favourite on the exhibition circuit for many years now. The sight and sounds of steam locomotives climbing this most-arduous of West Coast Main Line peaks have been forever immortalised by its builder, Graham Nicholas.

Bishopston in OO

A newcomer for 2024, Nick Palette’s latest OO layout pays tribute to his trainspotting days. Based on a small terminus station on the end of a secondary line, depicting anywhere on the Western Region of BR where one could expect to see main line trains in a less-than-main line setting, it’s a fantastic layout that will entertain viewers.

Euxton Junction in OO

Preston and District Model Railway Society's challenge was to keep pace with changes on the railway during the build of their intricate model. This highly-entertaining layout will keep you hooked for hours!

Alexandra Sidings in O

This curved twin level layout, where lines cross bridges and disappear to hidden sidings, makes for entertaining viewing, and engaging operation.

Raven’s Ravine in OO9

Who doesn’t love dragons? David Wright’s mythical layout will entertain all, but especially the kids, with real smoke effects and some impressive modelling!

Tickets are on sale now for the two-day event, with prices starting from just £7 (children under 5 are free) and anyone with a pre-booked ticket gains early access to the show – at 9:30am. Remember, PARKING IS FREE!
